WhatsApp Photos Not Showing in Your Gallery? Here Is Why
Short answer
On Android, turn on Media visibility under Settings → Chats, then restart the phone to force a media rescan. On iPhone, enable Settings → Chats → Save to Photos — it only affects future photos. Also check for a per-chat override set to Never and confirm storage permissions are granted.

Someone sends you a photo, you see it in the chat, and it never turns up in your gallery. The file is not missing and nothing is broken — in almost every case WhatsApp has been told, deliberately or otherwise, not to make it visible there.
There are four causes, and they are quick to check in sequence.
Cause one: Media visibility is off (Android)
This is the most common answer by a wide margin.
Go to Settings → Chats in WhatsApp and look at Media visibility. If the toggle is off, that is your explanation.
What this setting does mechanically is write a hidden zero-byte file named
.nomedia into WhatsApp’s media folders. Android’s media scanner reads that
marker and skips the folder entirely, so your gallery never indexes anything
inside it. The photos are present on disk and visible in the chat — they are
simply invisible to the gallery app.
Turn it on, then restart the phone. The restart forces a media rescan, which is what actually makes existing files appear. Without it the change often seems not to have worked.
Cause two: Save to Photos is off (iPhone)
The iPhone equivalent lives in the same place: Settings → Chats → Save to Photos.
The mechanism is different and that difference matters. On iPhone the setting controls whether a genuine second copy of each incoming file is written into your Photos library. There is no hidden marker and no folder to rescan.
The consequence is that turning it on does nothing retroactively. Photos received while it was off were never copied and never will be automatically. To recover a specific one, open it in the chat, tap the share icon and choose Save Image.
Also worth knowing: turning this on doubles the storage cost of every incoming photo, once in WhatsApp’s container and once in Photos. If storage is tight, leaving it off and saving selectively is the better arrangement — the reasoning is in stop WhatsApp saving to your gallery.
Cause three: a per-chat override
Easy to set by accident and easy to overlook, because the global setting looks correct.
- Open the chat where photos are not appearing.
- Tap the contact or group name at the top.
- Find Media visibility (Android) or Save to Photos (iPhone).
- If it is set to Never, change it to Default or Always.
Default follows your global setting. If one specific conversation is the problem while everything else works, this is nearly always why.
Cause four: permissions or a stale scanner
If both settings are correct and photos still do not appear, the gallery app’s access or index is the issue.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No WhatsApp photos anywhere | Media visibility off | Toggle on, restart |
| One chat only | Per-chat override | Set chat to Default |
| Photos appear after a delay | Scanner backlog | Restart the phone |
| Nothing appears after correct settings | Storage permission denied | Grant in app settings |
| Appear in one gallery app, not another | Second app’s own cache | Clear that app’s cache |
On Android, check Settings → Apps → WhatsApp → Permissions and confirm Photos and videos (or Files and media on older versions) is allowed. If it is denied, WhatsApp cannot write where the gallery can read.
Check your gallery app’s permissions on the same screen too. A gallery denied media access shows only pictures it can reach, which may not include WhatsApp’s folder.
On iPhone, go to Settings → WhatsApp → Photos and set it to All Photos. If it is set to Selected Photos or None, WhatsApp cannot add to your library regardless of what the in-app setting says. This one catches people out regularly, because the WhatsApp-side toggle appears to be on.
Removing a stubborn .nomedia file manually
Occasionally the marker file survives after Media visibility is turned back on — typically after an app update or a restore from backup.
You can remove it with a file manager. Navigate to:
Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp/Media/WhatsApp Images/
Enable Show hidden files in the file manager’s settings, look for a file
called .nomedia with a size of 0 bytes, and delete it. Check the WhatsApp
Video folder as well, and the Sent subfolders inside each.
On older Android versions the path is WhatsApp/Media/ at internal storage
root instead. Both paths are explained in
where WhatsApp photos and files are stored.
Restart the phone afterwards to trigger a rescan.
Be careful what you delete here. Only remove files named exactly .nomedia
with a size of 0 bytes. Everything else in these folders is your actual media,
and deleting it leaves broken placeholders in your chats.
What not to do
- Do not install a “gallery fix” or “media scanner” app. The modern Android versions of these have no special access and generally just trigger the same rescan a restart does. Several request sweeping storage permissions to do it.
- Do not clear WhatsApp’s storage to force a rebuild. On Android, Clear storage in the system app info screen wipes your local chat database and logs you out. It will not help with gallery visibility and will cost you your chats if your backup is not current.
- Do not reinstall WhatsApp. On Android 11 and newer, uninstalling deletes the app-specific media folder along with the app. If your backup excludes videos — a common setting — those are gone permanently.
- Do not assume missing photos mean deleted photos. If you can still see the image inside the chat, the file is on your phone. Only the gallery’s view of it is affected.
- Do not delete files from the media folder to “force a refresh”. There is nothing to refresh; the files are the content.
Getting specific photos back now
If you need a particular image in your gallery immediately rather than fixing the general case:
Both platforms: open the photo in the chat, tap the share or export icon, and choose Save Image (iPhone) or Save to Gallery (Android, where the option exists).
For a whole conversation: open the chat, tap its name, and use Export chat with Attach media. You get a zip containing every file from that conversation, which you can unpack anywhere. Exports with media are capped at roughly 10,000 messages, so long chats will be truncated from the oldest end.
What to expect
Turning Media visibility on and restarting the phone resolves the large majority of Android cases, with existing photos reappearing within a few minutes of the restart as the scanner works through the folders. Large libraries can take longer, and photos sometimes appear in batches rather than all at once.
On iPhone, the fix is forward-looking only. Everything received while Save to Photos was off stays where it is, inside WhatsApp, and needs saving individually if you want it in your library.
If the broader issue is that WhatsApp is consuming too much space rather than too little visibility, the opposite problem is covered in why WhatsApp takes up so much storage.
