How to Move WhatsApp From iPhone to Android
Short answer
Use WhatsApp's official transfer during the Android phone's initial setup — an Android phone already in use must be factory reset first. Connect the two phones with a USB-C to Lightning cable, run the Android setup wizard's app transfer, then install WhatsApp on the Android phone and verify the same phone number to trigger the import. Your iCloud backup cannot be used.

Two constraints decide whether this is possible for you, and both come before any instructions.
The transfer only runs during the Android phone’s initial setup, from the out-of-box wizard. If you have already finished setup and started using the phone, the only route is a factory reset. And unlike the Android-to-iPhone direction, this one needs a physical cable — USB-C on the Android side, Lightning on the iPhone side.
If neither of those is a problem, the process is reliable. If the Android phone is already set up and full of your things, read the alternatives section before you reset anything.
What you need before starting
| Requirement | Detail |
|---|---|
| Android phone state | Brand new, or factory reset and at the welcome screen |
| Android version | Android 12 or later |
| iPhone | iOS 15.5 or later, WhatsApp up to date |
| Cable | USB-C to Lightning, connecting both phones directly |
| Phone number | The same number on both phones |
| Power | Both phones charged, ideally above 50% |
The same-number requirement is absolute. If you are changing your number at the same time, move the platform first on the old number, then use Settings → Account → Change number inside WhatsApp on the Android phone afterwards.
Storage matters too. The iPhone’s WhatsApp data arrives in full, so the Android phone needs free space at least equal to what WhatsApp occupies on the iPhone. Check under iPhone Settings → General → iPhone Storage → WhatsApp before you begin, and if the number is alarming, clear the large files first — the WhatsApp storage guide covers how to find them without losing any messages.
If the Android phone is already set up
You have two honest options, and neither is painless.
Factory reset and start again. Back up everything already on the Android phone — photos to Google Photos, files to Drive, app data wherever it goes — then Settings → System → Reset options → Erase all data (factory reset). This wipes the phone completely. On a phone you unboxed yesterday, that costs you almost nothing. On one you have used for a year, think carefully.
Or skip the transfer. Keep the iPhone as an archive and start clean on Android. For plenty of people this is the right answer, particularly if the history is mostly group chat noise. You can still rescue the conversations that matter by exporting them individually first — see how to export a WhatsApp chat for the method and the size limits that catch people out.
The transfer, step by step
- On the iPhone, make sure WhatsApp is updated and you are signed in normally.
- Power on the Android phone and work through the setup wizard until it offers to copy apps and data from another device.
- Choose the option for copying from an iPhone or iOS device, then connect the two phones with the USB-C to Lightning cable.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to sign into your Google account on the Android phone and allow the data scan.
- When the list of transferable items appears, make sure WhatsApp is selected.
- On the iPhone, a WhatsApp prompt or QR code appears. Scan it with the Android phone’s camera if asked, then tap Start on the iPhone.
- WhatsApp prepares and exports the data. On a media-heavy account this takes a while — leave both phones alone and connected.
- Finish the rest of Android setup when the copy completes.
- Install WhatsApp from the Play Store, open it, and verify the same phone number.
- When prompted, tap Import and wait for it to finish.
Step nine and ten are the ones people skip. The transferred data sits inert on the Android phone until WhatsApp is installed and your number is verified. Until then it looks as though nothing came across at all.
What transfers and what does not
| Item | Transfers? |
|---|---|
| Chat history and text messages | Yes |
| Photos, videos and documents | Yes |
| Voice messages | Yes |
| Group chats and their history | Yes |
| Chat-level settings and archive state | Yes |
| Call history | No |
| Display name | No |
| Payment information | No |
| Status updates | No |
Call history and the display name are the two that surprise people. Reset your name on Android under Settings → tap your profile → Name.
Why your iCloud backup is no use here
The iPhone backs WhatsApp up to iCloud. Android restores from Google Drive. These are different storage services holding different file formats, and nothing converts one to the other — not a setting, not an account change, not a paid tool that claims otherwise.
This is the whole reason the cable transfer exists. If a product promises to convert your iCloud WhatsApp backup into something Android can restore, treat that claim as the warning it is.
Do not sign into WhatsApp through third-party software. Several of these tools ask exactly that, which hands over your account session, and several operate in breach of WhatsApp’s terms. Account bans and failed half-transfers are both documented outcomes.
Common failures
- No iPhone option in the Android setup wizard. The Android version is below 12, or the manufacturer’s wizard hides it behind a “copy from another device” step further in. Work through every screen rather than skipping ahead.
- WhatsApp greyed out in the transfer list. WhatsApp on the iPhone is below the minimum version. Update it from the App Store and restart the process.
- The transfer stalls. Usually the cable. Use a known-good one, push it fully home at both ends, and avoid adapters and hubs. Keep both screens awake.
- Not enough space on the Android phone. Clear WhatsApp media on the iPhone first, then retry. The transfer does not compress anything.
- Transfer finished but no chats. You have not verified the same number in WhatsApp yet, or you verified a different one.
After it completes
Do not wipe the iPhone yet. Spend a week on the Android phone first, opening old conversations and checking that media actually loads, before you erase the one device still holding a readable copy of everything.
Three things worth doing while you are in the settings anyway:
- Set up a Google Drive backup under Settings → Chats → Chat backup. Your iCloud backup no longer applies to anything, and the Android phone has none yet.
- Turn off automatic media downloads under Settings → Storage and data, so the new phone does not refill the way the old one did. The detail is in how to stop WhatsApp auto-downloading media.
- Reset your display name, since it did not come across.
Realistic outcomes
When the conditions are met the transfer works, and it works the first time. The failure rate is concentrated almost entirely in people whose Android phone was already set up, who used a flaky cable, or who verified a different number at the end.
If the Android phone is already in use and a reset is genuinely off the table, accept that the full history is not moving. Export the handful of chats you would be upset to lose, keep the iPhone in a drawer, and start clean. That is a worse outcome than a clean transfer, but it is better than paying a stranger for a tool that may lock you out of your account.
